What is different about the Diamonds compared to Pipers and Cessna's?

The Diamonds are exciting, efficient single-engine airplanes that are manufactured in Austria and London, Ontario.  Both the DA20 and the DA40 feature composite airframes, a control stick and a castering nose wheel.  They are built for safety and are fun to fly, with very enjoyable flight characteristics in all flight regimes.  The DA20 is a two seat airplane that is popular for those taking Private Pilot training.  The DA40 is a four seat airplane that is used for rental and Instrument flight training.  The DA40 features the state-of-the-art Garmin G1000 advanced avionics package

If I am used to flying Pipers and Cessna's, is the transition difficult into the Diamonds?

Our experience is that pilots who are actively flying Pipers and Cessna's are transitioning very quickly into the DA20 and DA40.  Checkouts typically take 1-2 hours for the DA20 and 2-4 hours for the DA40.  The DA20 and DA40 have very similar handling characteristics, but the Garmin G1000 in the DA40 requires a bit more transition time.

Sporty's and other aviation suppliers offer G1000 training products that suggest 8-10 hours of training?  Are these necessary?

While these products are effective training tools, we suggest that pilots transitioning to the G1000 spend 1-2 hours with one of our flight instructors and 2-3 hours in the airplane.  This training has provided an effective framework for learning the essentials of the G1000.  Those who have experience with the Garmin 430 and Garmin 530 are finding many similarities with the G1000.

What are the rental rates for the airplanes and the Instructors?

The Diamond Eclipses rent for $91 per hour.  The Diamond Star rents for $109 per hour and the Super Viking rents for $160 per hour, The Piper Aztec rents for $280 per hour.  The rates are “wet,” meaning that we pay for the fuel.  We have a fuel reimbursement policy if fuel needs to be purchased at other locations.  Flight Instruction is $35 per hour for Private Pilot Instruction and $40 per hour for other Flight Instruction, including airplane checkouts, Biennial Flight Reviews and advanced training.

Does New Horizons Aviation have a flying Club?

Yes we do.  Our flying club is still in the early stages, but several members have already joined.  We hope this becomes an active, exciting way to network with other club members and enjoy our reduced airplane rental rates for club members

Why should I join the flying club?

In addition to the social function of a flying club, our members enjoy reduced airplane rental rates that offset the dues.  Members who fly more than 50 hours per year will realize savings in less than two years of flying.
